It is often not considered that a young horse need massage and/or Cranio-Sacral therapy.
Therapy is mainly associated with being able to help a dysfunction, such as an injury, stiffness or crookedness. It is therefore often only deemed necessary if a horse shows signs of injuries that may have occurred over the years or if the horse has any underlying problems. However, it is much more difficult and a longer process to treat old dysfunctions.
Luckily, it is possible to prevent a long and tiring process, by using massage and craniosacral therapy, which means that you can help avoid injuries and thereby also the often-unavoidable compensations (distortions, stiffness and possible new damage). It can therefore be a really good idea to have your young horse checked regularly.
Some of the obvious reasons for treating young horses are that young horses…
- ... often has a tendency to be more playful and thereby be more exposed to injuries, e.g. to slide on the crease, this can easily result in misalignment and muscle tension. If you fail to treat these, it can lead tocrookedness in the following years and thereby create a wrong path, which in the long term can be more difficult to correct.
- ... are constantly growing and developing and thereby changes their physique. They will have periods where their proprio is affected and where therapy, especially Cranio-Sacral can help balance their nervous system and thereby improve their balance, coordination and proprioceptors.
- ... if they are used to receiving therapy from an early age, it will help them build their confidence with different people and relationship with other horses, making them less stressed should they need more serious treatment later in life.
It is recommended that young horses receive a massage or cranio-sacral therapy session every 3-5 months to ensure that they develop correctly and thus can move optimally without restrictions. This helps the horse to start its riding career with the optimal prerequisites.
